Bayer helps Argentina create national blood donor register
In 2001 Bayer in Argentina, working together with one of the country's well-known non-profit organizations, sponsored a project to create the first national register of blood donors.
Nine out of ten people need a blood donation either for themselves or a relative at some point in their lives. Currently, 90 percent of blood donations in Argentina come from replenishment donors, i.e. relatives or friends of the patient who try to help in specific cases, but who do not repeat the donation for unknown patients.
The goal of the National Register of Voluntary Blood Donors, a project designed by the leukemia-fighting foundation FUNDALEU, is to provide a large enough supply of safe blood to serve the needs of the entire country. Bayer sponsored the project, which is also being supported by the National Ministry of Health.
FUNDALEU is a well-known non-profit organization that has combated leukemia and other forms of blood cancer since its creation in 1956. The institution has the only medical center in Argentina that specializes in the treatment of patients with these diseases — the "Angélica Ocampo" Center for Hospitalization and Clinical Research (Centro de Internación e Investigación Clínica "Angélica Ocampo"). The center fosters basic and clinical scientific research and provides professional training on the diseases and their treatment.
