The Billion Tree Campaign
Bayer supports the unique campaign "Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign" initiated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP): One billion trees were to be donated in 2007. Bayer AG has decided to donated 100,000 trees to Nairobi, Kenya, where our partner UNEP is headquartered."When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and seeds of hope." These were the words of Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Wangari Maathai on assuming the patronage for this unique campaign which spans the globe. The planting of trees does not just have the symbolic meaning of creating life and a future that Wangari Maathai mentions. Reforestation is a fundamental task in many areas of the world for combating desertification, ensuring the quality of the soil and maintaining the correct balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. These issues cannot be underestimated in terms of their significance among today’s environmental challenges, e.g. those brought about by climate change.
