Training for farm workers

In many countries around the world, Bayer carries out regular projects aimed at improving the living and working conditions of farm workers. These efforts usually focus on the safe, cost-effective and environment-friendly use of crop protection products, an important area of business for Bayer.

In 2001 Bayer held intensive training courses at two of the largest banana plantations in Cameroon to teach employees about the safe use of crop protection products.

These training courses are the first of their kind in the region. They were organized at the request of Del Monte and various supply companies belonging to the UBA group of France.

The program's four modules focused on the safe use of crop protection products in general, their transportation, storage and special application methods (such as granules, spray guns and fungicides for aerial application). Each seminar was preceded by a visit to the plantations' storage areas and processing facilities, where the teams were observed in action. Improvement potential was then discussed in the seminars on the basis of these observations and with the help of photographic material illustrating the current situation. Further visits were made following the seminars to determine whether improvements had occurred and to give additional tips and information.
