Support for chronically ill patients in Belgium

Donations to alleviate social isolation

Bayer Benelux celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding by making a generous gift: in 1999 the company donated Euro 125,000 to the Belgian Cystic Fibrosis Organization.

The money went to a foundation that used the donation to enable practical forms of support for adults suffering from cystic fibrosis. Thanks to improved treatment, more and more cystic fibrosis patients are surviving until adulthood; yet they require comprehensive medical, social and psychological care. Bayer's donation is assisting in efforts to free patients from the social isolation often associated with cystic fibrosis. The Cystic Fibrosis Organization used the money, for example, to buy computers for the patients — allowing them in turn to prepare for vocational training courses.

The metabolic disorder cystic fibrosis (CF, also known as mucoviscidosis) is caused by a genetic defect. Although the disease remains incurable, greatly improved symptomatic therapy means that CF patients now have an average life expectancy of more than 40 years.
