Strengthening the position of women, reducing infant mortality, improving the health of mothers – these are elementary objectives of the United Nations formulated within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals.
According to estimates of the World Health Organization (WHO), of the good 210 million pregnancies recorded each year, around 38 percent are unplanned and 20 percent are terminated. Particularly in developing and emerging countries with high mortality rates for mothers and children, women often do not have any possibility of protecting themselves against unwanted pregnancies, which in turn increases the risk of falling even deeper into poverty.
Poverty is one of the biggest obstacles when it comes to gaining access to health care. Half a million women, above all in poorer countries, still die during pregnancy or childbirth each year.
Bayer is the world market leader in contraceptives and has many years of experience in this area. The company has been active in family planning programs for over 40 years. For example, we are involved in joint projects with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and non-governmental organizations such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
In our agreements with our cooperation partners, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals makes sure that people from poorer countries can also access a broad range of family-planning methods. The company is active in more than 130 countries, giving people access to a wide range of family-planning methods, regardless of income.
Together with the German Foundation for World Population (DSW), we have launched a unique educational program for young teenagers under the age of 15 in Uganda. The aim of 'Youth2Youth' is to encourage responsible behavior in the target group. The underlying idea is that the information that young people receive comes from their peers, is adapted to local conditions, and is supported by a 'Youth Truck'.
