About a quarter of the annual total of approx. 190 million pregnancies worldwide currently end in abortion. More than 500,000 women die every year of complications during pregnancy or delivery. Another aspect is that unwanted children increase the poverty risk and simultaneously lead to a deterioration in development possibilities for the individual child.
As the global market leader in contraceptives we support the cause of giving people access to methods of family planning, irrespective of their economic situation. Bayer Schering Pharma is active in more than 130 countries, giving people access to a wide range of family planning methods, regardless of income. Since 1961 we have supplied 2.5 billion cycle packages to family planning organizations and consumers in developing countries.
In terms of practical action, Bayer Schering Pharma supports the efforts of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) to provide worldwide access to means of fertility control by 2015.
