Protection for agricultural laborers in Mexico
Learning how to use crop protection products
The careful handling of crop protection products does not have a rich tradition in Mexico. Yet this is changing, thanks to an initiative Bayer helped to start in 1999 in cooperation with the Mexican crop protection association AMIFAC.
Achievements so far have included the removal of old packaging materials and the like from fields, training for laborers in the correct handling of crop protection products, the establishment of disposal facilities and stricter monitoring of storage areas for crop protection products in connection with more stringent safety regulations. Anyone who doesn't satisfy the requirements will no longer receive deliveries. The most recently set up facility is the SINTOX emergency service which features a 24-hour hotline for poisoning incidents in conjunction with the distribution throughout Mexico of 700 emergency packs containing essential medicines.
