Supporting daycare centers in India

Getting children off the streets

It is a problem that exists in every country on Earth: who looks after the children when both parents work? A dense network of preschools and daycare centers as is common in many industrial countries is largely not available in India. But a project supported by Bayer in the Mumbai (formerly Bombay) and Pune regions at least provided a little help.

Particularly on the Indian subcontinent, both parents frequently depend on a job to pay the bills. The situation is particularly difficult for working families in the slums who cannot rely on the support of extended families. The aid organization "Mobile Crèches" recognizes this problem. Mobile Crèches welcomes all forms of support, and has found a strong partner in Bayer. Bayer India supported the aid workers with more than just material assistance such as drug donations and teaching materials. Indeed, Bayer employees even personally helped to take care of children.

More than 2,500 boys and girls are currently being cared for during the day at about 30 daycare centers and preschools in and around Mumbai and Pune. Care at these facilities goes far beyond simply keeping an eye on the children, as the employees are just as active in providing health care as education — an extremely important service, because children from the slums do not have access to public care and education facilities.
