Campaign against dengue fever in Paraguay

Between August 1999 and April 2000, more than 150,000 cases of dengue fever were recorded in Paraguay. With support from Bayer and assisted by local students, therefore, the Paraguayan Ministry for Public Health and Social Affairs distributed educational materials in Asunción, the country's capital. The materials provided by Bayer included a television and a radio commercial, 10,000 posters, 25,000 leaflets, 50,000 stickers and 100 t-shirts. The materials were conceived according to pedagogical aspects by an interdisciplinary team consisting of local designers and experts.

Dengue fever is a dangerous tropical disease that causes joint and muscle pain, fever and even internal bleeding in severe cases. In a worst-case scenario, the disease can be fatal. The disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti), is widespread in many South and Central American countries, as well as in Asia. The most effective means of eradicating dengue, which is endemic in some Latin American countries, is prevention campaigns aimed at educating the population about basic hygiene measures to prevent the spread of mosquitoes.
