Project to protect waterways
Assistance for the San Cristobal
The SACRED (San Cristobal River Enhancement Defenders) Project was launched to protect the San Cristobal river from further environmental damage caused by increasing industrialization in the region. The river empties into Lake Laguna de Bay — one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, and thus an important drinking water reservoir for the region. The lake's abundant fish stocks are also a key source of food and income for a large part of the local population.
As chairwoman of the project supported by Bayer, Tess Cayton who manages the company's crop protection plant in Canlubang organizes a number of projects together with other Bayer employees. After all, purified wastewater from Bayer's Canlubang production facility enters a tributary of the San Cristobal. In cooperation with scientists and representatives from other industrial companies in the region and the city government, Bayer hopes to implement a variety of strategies to protect the waterways.
Emissions are to be further reduced through intensive monitoring and evaluation of wastewater data. Bayer employees are also supporting a related information campaign directed above all at schoolchildren and local government officials. Further measures include initiatives to clean up the river and restore its banks by planting trees.
