Australia
Ensuring an even playing field
Blood doping is an issue that has plagued the international sports arena for years, creating an uneven playing field in many sports, as well as exposing athletes to serious health risks and in some cases leading to death.
Bayer Australia has worked closely with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in the fight against blood doping and EPO (erythropoietin) abuse. Bayer's sponsorship of AIS laboratory instrumentation began in 1996, and has helped support important breakthroughs including detection of blood doping and EPO abuse. This association culminated in the development and implementation of the EPO test for the Sydney Olympic Games, which represented the first ever use of blood testing at the Olympics. Bayer's ADVIA® 120 hematology system was the key technological component of the EPO blood test.
"Without Bayer's technology it would not have been possible to develop this test and assist in the prevention of blood doping during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and beyond," explains Robin Parisotto, Laboratory Manager, Sports Hematology and Biochemistry Laboratory, Australian Institute of Sport.
