Australia
Healthy greyhounds
As long as they run fast enough, plenty of Australians are interested in them. But what happens to greyhounds once they have passed the peak of their career? A nonprofit organization called the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) occupies itself with the fate of racing dogs in Australia whose services are no longer needed. The main task of the volunteers from GAP is to find new homes for the "retired" greyhounds. The organization also educates the public about the conditions greyhounds require when kept as pets — and about the advantages these fast-running animals can provide as companions.
Last year 400 greyhounds were given up for adoption. Bayer Australia ensures that the animals are as healthy as possible when they reach their new owners: each dog receives three one-month packs of Advantage DUO and Drontal. Thanks to this pharmaceutical donation, the animals remain free of fleas, worms and other disease-carrying parasites.
