Program to foster talented chemistry students enters its seventh year

In March 2002, Bayer awarded scholarships to 20 Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) students in recognition of their excellent academic performance in 2001.

The scholarship program for BUCT students was launched by Bayer in 1996 with a grant of nearly 1.6 million yuan. The goal of the program is to promote the education of talented Chinese undergraduate and post-graduate students of chemistry.

Bayer's investment in the Chinese education system reflects the importance of the region for the company's expansion plans in Asia. China is Bayer's second largest market in Asia, with sales of approximately one billion dollars. Bayer has about 2,200 employees in the region and owns majority interests in a total of 17 companies in the People's Republic of China. Nine Bayer manufacturing companies in the areas of health care, polymers and specialty chemicals are currently operational, and local production accounts for a steadily increasing proportion of business.
