CAS-Bayer Research Award
Encouraging talent
Bayer is cooperating with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to promote young researchers in the People's Republic. In 2002 they awarded a prize — the CAS-Bayer Research Award — for the first time. This award is part of a cooperation agreement signed by Bayer and the Academy in April 2001.
The prize was conceived primarily as an incentive to young researchers. It is also designed to encourage Chinese scientists doing post-doctoral work at universities in other countries to return to China. Another purpose is to support promising scientists with scholarship programs. The prize is awarded jointly by the two sponsors for two categories of work: the "Start-Up Fund" is intended for scientists who set up their own research teams, while the "Young Chinese Scientist Award" goes to young researchers working at the CAS institutes.
The CAS-Bayer Start-Up Fund prize 2001/2002 is worth US$ 25,000, while the CAS-Bayer Young Chinese Scientist Award is worth US$ 10,000. All told Bayer will provide the CAS with US$ 500,000 through 2005.
