Sports and Culture

Bayer means sports and culture too

Bayer has promoted cultural and sporting activities ever since the company was founded. The range of company-sponsored clubs and societies is unique throughout the world. Here you can read more about Bayer's support for sports and culture.

How Bayer promotes sports

Whenever those with an interest in sports hear the name Bayer, they usually think immediately of the professional soccer team Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Yet the company's involvement in professional soccer in Germany is just one facet of Bayer's support for sports, which has a long tradition.
100 years of successful sports sponsorship
In 2004 the company celebrated 100 years of sports sponsorship, as the club we now know as TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen was founded in 1904. Just a few weeks after the centennial celebrations, Bayer athletes recorded numerous major successes. Of the 21 Bayer athletes who took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Peking, China, one returned with a gold medal: fencer Britta Heidemann. To date, Bayer athletes have won a total of 61 Olympic medals.
Disabled sports
Disabled sports have traditionally played an important role at Bayer. The Herbert Grünewald Foundation founded by Bayer is one of the most famous sponsors of disabled sports in Germany. Since 2000, in addition, Bayer is a main sponsor of the German Disabled Sports Association. Furthermore the support for the disabled sports department at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen achieves success: At the Paralympics in Beijing athletes from TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen won 8 medals, among them Katrin Green who won gold in the 200m run. Athletes from Bayer have so far won a total of 55 medals at the Paralympics.

Youth and recreational sports
Yet professional sports are not possible without a solid foundation that discovers and promotes talented young athletes. TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen was several times honored by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for its excellent youth sports activities.

And for those who would like to participate in sports without higher ambitions, Bayer has also created an infrastructure that is unparalleled in Germany: a system of 27 company-sponsored sports clubs with a total of more than 50,000 members.

New perspectives through cultural activities

For over 100 years, culture at Bayer has stood for good entertainment and intellectual enrichment. At the beginning of the 20th century, a company orchestra and cultural affairs department were established. Today, Bayer maintains 17 different ensembles and clubs, and regularly offers a high-quality program of events for those interested in culture.

Cultural affairs are a key part of Bayer's corporate social responsibility. Cultural experiences also promote in particular qualities that are important to everyday life at our company: creativity, an interest in new things and openness toward unfamiliar situations.

Our internationally aligned cultural activities also reflect the way we relate to one another in a global enterprise. After all, cultural diversity is part of our mission statement and a vital element of our corporate culture.
