Communal vegetable gardens

In September 2001, the first course of the "Communal Vegetable Gardens" project, which was made possible by a partnership between Bayer, the Belford Roxo Citizens' Organization (Femab) and the non-governmental organization "Solidariedade" ("Solidarity"), began with 80 schoolchildren.

The six-month course is open to young people between the ages of 10 and 17. The students spend three hours a day in the vegetable garden, where they learn about soil treatment, planting and harvesting techniques. A primary goal is to keep the children occupied and off the streets. In order to take part in the project, the young people must be able to prove that they regularly attend a school in the local school district.

During the lessons in the garden, the young people learn about different types of vegetables, as well as medicinal and ornamental plants. To enable more people to benefit from the project, the schoolchildren are given seeds and cuttings so that they can start a vegetable garden of their own at home with their parents.
