Japan
Student reporters learn about genomics-based pharmaceutical development
For the second consecutive year, Bayer Japan supported the essay contest sponsored by the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper dealing with the challenges facing health care in the new century. Eight high school students selected from about 280 applicants from all over Japan were sent to Bayer facilities in the United States as student reporters from August 8 to 12. Reports on their visit were published nationwide in the Mainichi newspaper. The students were sent to the United States, an important base for Bayer's genomic drug development, with the aim of helping the younger generation to better understand the impact of this new technology on medical care and lifestyles. They visited research facilities of Bayer and its cooperation partner CuraGen in West Haven und New Haven, Connecticut, as well as Bayer's research laboratories in Berkeley, California, to learn about the use of information technology, high-throughput screening and other techniques.
