Working conditions for farm laborers

The figures are impressive: over the past three years, Bayer's “Agrovida” campaign in Colombia has reached 28,538 schoolchildren, 34,634 small farmers and agricultural laborers, 594 teachers, 1,752 university students and technicians and 2,201 merchants, as well as people with other vocations. The initiative has expanded to nearly all rural regions of the Andean country.

All participants receive information specially adapted to their needs concerning the responsible use of crop protection products and the safe handling and environmentally friendly disposal of chemicals. An Agrovida instructional film even won first prize in a competition for safety videos.

The education of children is an especially important issue to the program's directors. Children act as multiplicators and are able to pass on the information to their parents, who are often illiterate. The contents are often conveyed in a “playful” manner – for example with hand puppets. One of the campaign's most significant instruments is clearly the protective equipment distributed free of charge to farm laborers.

Ultimately the Agrovida campaign is aimed at improving the living and working conditions of small farmers and agricultural laborers in Colombia and other Latin American countries. What's more, the program has sharpened the consciousness of schoolchildren and students in particular for the sustainable use of crop protection products – clearly an investment in the future.
