Preventive health care in Zambia: Anti-malaria campaign

In the fight against malaria, Bayer works together with the Christian aid organization World Vision. The cooperation is focused on the concept of insecticide-treated mosquito nets. Such nets are considered to be an effective means of combating malaria infections, as they reliably repel the Anopheles mosquito that transmits malaria. Experience shows that nets without this additional protection allow mosquitoes to continue to sting through the fabric when the victim rolls over against the net while sleeping — a frequent occurrence considering the close living quarters in many regions of Africa. The use of insecticide-treated nets is seen as a long-term form of malaria prevention and is thus strongly recommended by the World Health Organization.

Bayer made available 5,000 nets and carried out 5,000 initial insecticide treatments free of charge. The donation was supplemented with comprehensive information, education and communication measures:
  • Cartoons were specially developed to educate schoolchildren and illiterate adults about possible methods of prevention.
  • Instructional videos and a health magazine also contained information about this effective form of prevention.
  • mployees from Bayer's office in Zimbabwe took part in a "Train the Trainer" program to teach the World Vision staff how to use the nets and insecticide treatment kits.
In Zambia, the pilot project ran through the end of 2001. The result: the method proved highly successful and the partnership is now being continued on a commercial level.
