Care for children in need

Since August 2006 Bayer Austria has supported the “European House of the Child”, a socio-pedagogical care center in Vienna’s 16th municipal district. Here, care is provided for 30 children and young people from difficult family backgrounds who have been assigned to the institution by the youth welfare office. Social education workers try to give the children the family environment they have missed in a living community to prepare them for life in the outside world.

Many of the children looked after in the European House of the Child require regular therapy owing to traumatic experiences in the first few years of their lives. Much of this is paid for by the public authorities but there is still a need for therapy beyond this. Bayer fills the gap by sponsoring additional measures such as experiential education involving interaction with animals or workshops on violence prevention or on developing positive self-esteem. Bayer Austria’s financial support also enables the employment of an extra care worker for the children.

Bayer’s annual contribution also goes towards financing excursions and visits to various events – experiences which are part of everyday life among “normal” families but which constitute something special to the children living in the European House of the Child.

Bayer employees also commit some of their leisure time to the institution.
