Objective of BIG is to identify and develop new growth opportunities, thus preparing entry into new and expanding markets. The fields of activity match Bayer’s overall concept “science for a better life” and take advantage of competences within the subgroups, often in cooperation with external partners such as universities, institutes, start ups or other companies.
Development of innovative solutions across the lines of Bayer’s subgroups and creation of new products and business opportunities are among the strong points of BIG. Currently the focus is on medical devices and the production of plant-made pharmaceuticals.
Advanced wound care products present an attractive growth area within medical devices. Chronic wounds such as diabetic foot, venous and decubitus ulcers affect 1-2 % of the population in industrialized countries and lead to tremendous treatment costs accounting for billions of euros worldwide. Elderly patients in particular often have to deal with chronic wounds. Thanks to its silica gel fibers, Bayer’s new wound dressing actively supports the natural healing process. The material could provide ideal conditions for healing: The textile fibers apparently provide healthy cells with an ideal structure to which they can adhere, enabling new skin layers to form rapidly along the fibers of the dressing. The silica gel fibers are broken down by the body over time. It is therefore not necessary to remove the wound dressing.
The clinical trial – started in summer 2009 - is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
