Europe is Bayer's "home market"

In 2009 Bayer posted sales of EUR 12.9 billion on the European market. A comprehensive distribution network along with major production facilities in Germany, Belgium, France, the U.K., Italy, Spain and Finland give Bayer a strong presence in this important economic region, which has a population of almost half a billion people in the 27 E.U. countries alone. Bayer has established its own companies or branches in virtually every country in eastern Europe. The Group employed a total of 54,500 people in its European companies on December 31, 2009.

Main production centers

Bayer is safeguarding the international competitiveness of its European production sites by setting up manufacturing and logistics competence centers in the region.

Germany

Bayer AG has several sites in Germany.

The major production sites in Germany are in Leverkusen, Monheim (in German), Dormagen, Krefeld-Uerdingen, Wuppertal-Elberfeld, Berlin, Bergkamen, Bitterfeld, Brunsbüttel, Grenzach, Kiel and Weimar. The oldest site – in Wuppertal – was established more than 130 years ago. Including the facilities of the major subsidiaries, Bayer has 15 production sites in Germany.

Belgium

One of Bayer MaterialScience's two major production facilities for Makrolon® is located at Antwerp, Belgium. It is also at Antwerp that the new melt polycarbonate process was first implemented. This is a faster, more environmentally friendly production method that provides an even greater guarantee of quality and reliability. Bayer has two production sites in Belgium, employing more than 950 of the company’s total Belgian workforce of around 1,530 (as of Dec. 31, 2008).

Finland

Bayer employs more than 700 people in Finland - more than 600 in Turku and 100 in Espoo. Bayer HealthCare employees are involved in the development and production of long-acting, polymer-based pharmaceuticals in the fields of women's health care and oncology. (as of Jan. 1, 2011).

France

The European headquarters of Bayer CropScience is located in Lyon, France. This subgroup has production plants in Villefranche/Saône and Marle-sur-Serre. Bayer HealthCare has a production facility in Gaillard/Savoie. Bayer MaterialScience produces polyols at Fos-sur-Mer. The four French production facilities employ just over 930 of the 3,590 people currently working for the company in France (as of Dec. 31, 2008).

United Kingdom

Bayer CropScience has two production plants, in Norwich and Widnes. They employ around 500 of the company's total U.K. and Ireland workforce of 1,340 (as of Dec. 31, 2008).

Italy

In Italy, Bayer has four production centers that employ 900 of the 2,420 people working for the company in Italy. Garbagnate, near Milan, is one of the most important sites for the production of pharmaceuticals. Filago, where crop protection agents and plastics are produced, was the first chemical park in Italy to be certified to the E.U. Eco-Management and Audit Scheme EMAS II. Bayer MaterialScience has two production facilities in Mussolente and Nera Montoro (as of Dec. 31, 2008).

Spain

Tarragona in Spain is Bayer's most important production site in southern Europe. It is here that the company operates a state-of-the-art MDI plant. The site at La Felguera in Asturia accounts for 85 percent of Bayer's global production of the active ingredient for Aspirin®, the "drug of the century." In Madrid there is a pharmaceutical production plant operated by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals. Zona Franca in Barcelona is home to a worldwide competence center for raw materials used in the production of high-quality wood coating systems. There are five Bayer production sites in Spain employing around 1,900 of the total of 2,670 people working for the company in this country (as of Dec. 31, 2008).
