The Otto Bayer Award
The Otto Bayer Award was established by one of the most successful chemical researchers as a disposition in his will: Professor Otto Bayer – who was not related to the company’s founders – lived from 1902 to 1982, was in charge of research at Bayer AG for many years and is regarded as the inventor of polyurethane chemistry. He maintained intensive contact to universities and supported higher learning.
The €50,000 Otto Bayer Award was presented yearly between 1984 and 1996, and since 1996 has been awarded every two years to external scientists.
It is presented in honor of outstanding research achievements in groundbreaking areas of chemistry and biochemistry. The current focus is on:
