Berocca™ – The Healthy Edge
for Sustained Performance

Vitamins are essential components in an array of body functions such as energy metabolism, immune defense, or neuronal processing. A deficiency in vitamins and minerals can lead to serious diseases. Berocca™ has a specific formula which combines the water-soluble vitamins of the B complex, vitamin C, as well as the minerals calcium, magnesium, and zinc. All these vitamins and minerals are known to be important players in cognitive function. They act synergistically and provide consumers with the necessary edge to be on top of their game and to perform better.

Consuming a broad variety of healthy food such as fruits and vegetables is the key for physical and mental well-being. With a modern, demanding and stressful life, dietary supplements have become an integral part of an overall wellness regimen and provide specific benefits for an optimized performance. As vitamins cannot be produced by the human body, they are mainly obtained through food. Vitamins are essential components in an array of body functions such as energy metabolism, immune defense, or neuronal processing. A deficiency in vitamins and minerals can lead to serious diseases. Ever since researchers discovered the vital function of vitamins and minerals, scientists have begun isolating these components to use them as food supplements.

The first vitamins were produced at the beginning of the 20th century, however, only at small scales. In 1933, Swiss chemist Tadeusz Reichstein synthesized vitamin C at an industrial level for the first time. Throughout the next fifteen years, scientists all around the world reported successful synthesis of various vitamins of the B complex at industrial scales. These discoveries opened the door to multi-vitamin supplementation.

Early on, one of the leading suppliers of various vitamin supplements was Roche Consumer Health. The Swiss company, which Bayer acquired in 2005, introduced Beflavin Roche (vitamin B1 and B2) and Benerva (vitamin B1) in the 1930’s. By the end of the decade, vitamin products became the mainstay of the company. Supplementing with water-soluble B vitamins has beneficial health effects. B vitamins cannot be stored in the body over longer periods of time. Therefore the body needs to be constantly supplied with sufficient amounts of these vitamins. There are a total of nine water-soluble vitamins: B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin/nicotinamide), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folic acid), B12 (cobalamine), as well as vitamin C. All of them are specifically involved in cognitive function and energy metabolism.

In 1969, Berocca™ was introduced in Switzerland as a neurotropic vitamin combination of the vitamin B complex plus vitamin C. Over the course of the next years, researchers realized that minerals were also necessary to support the function of vitamins in the body. This marked the beginning of the development of multi-vitamin and mineral combinations. With performance becoming more and more important in our society, holistic alternatives to products such as energy drinks were needed. In 2010, Bayer introduced a new version of Berocca™ with additional guarana. Berocca™ Boost is specially formulated to improve performance rapidly.

Today, the Berocca™ formula is one of the rare vitamin and mineral supplements being supported by multiple double-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled clinical trials. Since 2004, the brand has been consecutively voted by Boots customers in the UK as “Best Energy Supplement”. Berocca™ is currently registered in about 70 countries, with more than 350 million packs sold worldwide.

Consumer Benefits

Physical stamina and mental sharpness both are important for achievement-driven individuals to perform. By leading a healthy lifestyle with sports and balanced nutrition, they can remain a step ahead, even when they have many professional and personal responsibilities to tackle. However, consuming adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables that deliver all the vitamins and minerals the body needs can become challenging. This is why many consumers then turn to micronutrient supplements like Berocca™. It contains all water-soluble vitamins of the B complex and C, as well as the minerals calcium magnesium and zinc. All these micronutrients are known to play an important role in energy metabolism and cognitive function. They act synergistically and provide consumers with the necessary edge to be on top of their game and to perform better.

To date, only a few studies have assessed the relationship between supplementation with nutritional products and brain function. Berocca™ is among the few supplements with extensive scientific evidence.1,2,3,4,5 All its micronutrients are known to be involved in cognitive function and energy metabolism, thus being effective against physical and mental strain. In these situations, the body storage for vitamins and minerals depletes more quickly. A subclinical deficiency may arise, causing symptoms such as fatigue or diminished concentration. Ideally, individuals can counteract these symptoms by consuming more fruits and vegetables. In a fast-paced world, however, micronutrient supplements are a convenient way to reap health and mental benefits.

Many multi-vitamin supplements often only target cognitive performance alone. As physical stamina and mental sharpness are highly inter-related, Berocca™ has been developed to fill the dietary gap by using a formula that is specifically tailored to improve both neuronal and neuromuscular function. The combination provides superior efficacy in contrast to food that has been fortified with single vitamins or minerals.

Berocca™ Boost contains guarana in addition to the micronutrients included in Berocca™ Performance. Supplementation with Berocca™ Boost was shown to lead to immediate improvements in cognitive performance and reduced mental fatigue. It is a healthy and natural alternative to products aimed at giving an energy boost.

For sustained results, Berocca™ is recommended to be taken regularly. Because of its high safety profile, Berocca™ can be consumed even over a longer period of time.
