Living With Irritable Bowel Syndrome

"I Always Had to Know Where the Nearest Toilet Was."

Krzysztof has lived with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) since childhood. Frequent trips to the bathroom, stomach pain, cramps, and constant planning around toilet access shaped his daily life for years. After many medical appointments and long periods without clear answers, he eventually received an IBS diagnosis and found ways to better manage his symptoms.

When digestive symptoms begin early in life

As early as elementary school, Krzysztof’s daily life was shaped by digestive symptoms. School trips often included extra bus stops, breakfast was something he sometimes skipped, and knowing where the nearest toilet was became essential.
These challenges affected far more than physical comfort. They also created stress, embarrassment, and limitations that stayed with him into adulthood.

A long search for answers

Before moving from Warsaw to Amsterdam for his studies, Krzysztof had already undergone two gastroscopies and three colonoscopies. Even after these procedures, he did not receive an explanation that helped him manage what he was experiencing.
Instead, he was told that stress, diet, or alcohol might be the cause. "Just stop stressing," he says with a hint of irony, as this advice did not address the reality of his symptoms or improve his day-to-day life.

Trying to manage symptoms independently

Determined to find relief, Krzysztof began researching on his own. He found some substances that helped reduce his symptoms and made it easier to plan his day.
One example was Loperamide, which reduced bathroom visits but also led to cramps and discomfort for him. His experience reflects how people living with IBS often spend years trying to understand triggers, routines, and symptom-management strategies that work for their own lives.

Finally receiving an IBS diagnosis

It was not until the end of his studies that a general practitioner told Krzysztof that he had irritable bowel syndrome.
Later, after returning to Warsaw and starting his first job, the demands of constant travel, irregular sleep, and meals from gas stations or catering made his condition worse. Stress and digestive symptoms reinforced each other, creating a cycle that was difficult to break.

A turning point in daily life

A conversation with a colleague who had similar experiences became a turning point. Krzysztof decided to try Iberogast after hearing the recommendation. "I had nothing to lose," thought Krzysztof, and he ordered a bottle.
To his surprise, he felt a significant improvement within just a few days. The stomach pains subsided, the cramps became less frequent, and the feeling of heaviness disappeared. For the first time, he experienced what it felt like to have a properly functioning digestive system.

Living with IBS today

Krzysztof began to plan his life according to his own needs, no longer allowing his stomach to dictate his actions. "This is not just a temporary change; the Iberogast drops are now a permanent part of my routine," he shares. "I don’t leave the house without them; they are as essential to me as my smartphone or passport."
His story shows how IBS can affect people from childhood onward and how long it can take to reach understanding, diagnosis, and a workable routine. It also highlights the emotional and practical burden of digestive conditions that are often misunderstood.
