What we do in Pakistan

Bayer’s operations in Pakistan encompass three divisions – Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Health and Crop Science – through which we work to contribute to providing solutions for a better life, be it with healthcare or agriculture.

The Pharmaceuticals division focuses on prescription products, including cardiology/thrombosis, women’s healthcare, pulmonology, oncology, anti-infectives, and ophthalmology. The division also comprises our radiology business.

The Consumer Health division markets both nonprescription/OTC (over-the-counter) and prescription products, mainly in the dermatology, nutritional supplement and digestive health categories.

The Crop Science division is a world-leading agriculture enterprise with businesses in seeds and crop protection. With the global acquisition of Monsanto by Bayer in 2018, our Crop Science division is being transformed with new exciting opportunities in agriculture: tending to the earth today and striving to ensure healthy food for all tomorrow.

At Bayer, we believe it is important to contribute to society’s future viability and create value in diverse ways. Within the scope of our social commitment, we make targeted strategic investments in the areas of science and education, health, social needs and community projects. In Pakistan, our Corporate Societal Engagement (CSE) initiatives focus primarily on health and education – two of the most pressing needs of any developing nation.

We partner with reputed organizations making a significant contribution in the health and education sectors in Pakistan, and support initiatives by them which improve access to quality of education and healthcare for under-served communities.

This way, we are able to invest in initiatives and projects that promote a gradual but sustainable improvement in standards of healthcare and education in Pakistan. After all, this is our purpose: Science for a better life.

TCF Aagahi Adult Literacy Program

Bayer representatives visit The Citizen’s Foundation’s Aagahi Adult Literacy Program.

Set up in 1996 by a group of concerned citizens, The Citizens Foundation (TCF) is one of the leading non-profit organizations operating in the education sector in Pakistan, providing low-cost formal education to the underserved, without discrimination

Aagahi means ‘creating awareness’ in the Urdu language. The Aagahi Adult Literacy Program run by TCF aims to impart non-formal literacy, numeracy and other basic skills to TCF students‘ mothers, sisters and other out-of-school women and girls between the ages of 12 and 65 years old. These literacy classes provide a two-fold benefit: improvement in TCF student performance by strengthening the home-school connection, and enhancing literacy in the community by enabling adult women to actively and independently contribute towards the running of their homes and communities.

In 2018, Bayer Pakistan has supported TCF by providing funding for the running of approximately 25% of Aagahi Adult Literacy Centers, reaching out to 18,000 women in rural and urban villages and slums across 68 cities and towns in Pakistan. Bayer Pakistan has partnered with TCF to support the Aagahi Adult Literacy Program since 2014.

Indus Hospital Expansion Project

The Indus Health Network provides absolutely free, quality treatment to millions of deserving patients through its countrywide network of hospitals in Pakistan. Indus Health Network is a respected and reputed player in the healthcare sector in Pakistan with a strong track record of running innovative and effective healthcare programs and interventions. It commenced operations in 2007 with one hospital in Karachi and has expanded over the years to include 12 full-service hospitals located in the large cities of Karachi and Lahore, as well as the towns of Badin, Bhong, Muzaffargarh and Multan. The Indus Health Network also has an extensive outreach program covering 41 districts of Pakistan for treatment of TB and Malaria.

The Indus Hospital is undertaking an expansion project of its Karachi-based hospital facility in order to facilitate the staggering rise in the number of patient visits and admission queues at the hospital on a daily basis. This expansion project includes the addition of rooms and beds in general wards, day surgery and ambulatory day centers in the departments of neurology, general medicine, pediatric oncology and surgery.

Bayer Pakistan has sponsored a consulting clinic in the expansion project to support the Indus Health Network to expand its network in order to make quality, free healthcare accessible to every Pakistani.

The Kidney Centre with Vital Diagnostic Equipment

With regard to kidney disease, Pakistan ranks eighth globally, with over 20 million people suffering from renal problems. The Kidney Centre (TKC) opened its doors to the public in 1985 with the aim of providing quality renal care to all, irrespective of their ability to pay.

While TKC started its operations with just two dialysis machines, today after a period of over 30 years, it is a modern medical facility – a 100-bed hospital equipped with a state-of-the-art dialysis unit that runs in four shifts with 66 dialysis machines plus eight executive dialysis cubicles. The hospital also has a general ward, semi-private and private rooms, four operating theatres, an ICU, laboratory, radiology and emergency services. In 2017, the Kidney Centre’s Patient Welfare expenditure exceeded PKR 329 million and 117,822 needy patients were treated.

In 2018, Bayer Pakistan has supported The Kidney Centre with funding for a stationary x-ray system with bucky stand and bucky table for its Radiology Department. The current x-ray machine had been in use for over 25 years and was in urgent need of an upgrade. In 2017, the radiology department carried out 24,275 procedures including x-rays, CT scans and ultrasounds, among which were 16,000 x-ray procedures.
