Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is a key focus for Bayer. We are advancing innovative treatments that aim to extend survival, delay disease progression, and help preserve quality of life across different stages of the disease. Our goal is to help give patients the possibility of more time, more meaningful moments, and more life with the people they love. Because for us, science should be driven by life, not just survival.
For men diagnosed with prostate cancer, time matters, but so does how that time is lived.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and the fifth most common cause of cancer death in men worldwide. In 2022 alone, approximately 397,000 died from prostate cancer worldwide, and an estimated 1.5 million men diagnosed with the disease. And this number is growing. Annual prostate cancer diagnoses are projected to rise from 1.4 million annually in 2020 to 2.9 million by 2040.ii Behind these numbers are men, partners, families and healthcare systems worldwide facing the impact of a disease that can change life drastically.
Why earlier detection matters
Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms. In more advanced disease, symptoms may appear, but they can overlap with other diseases or conditions such as infections or benign prostate enlargement. Prostate cancer is commonly detected through PSA blood testing, digital rectal examination, prostate MRI, and, when needed, biopsy and further imaging for diagnosis, staging, and monitoring.
When diagnosed early, more management and treatment options are available, which is why it’s so important to increase screening and for men to get tested. Treatments can include surgery, radiation therapy, and hormone-based treatments that reduce or block testosterone activity to help slow or stop cancer growth and enable more personalized care.
Life Beyond a Prostate Cancer Diagnosis
Thanks to advances in medicine, many men with prostate cancer can now live longer. But we don’t just want them to live longer, we want them to live well after they’ve been diagnosed.
We are dedicated to transforming the prostate cancer standard of care by developing and reaching patients with innovative therapies that not only extend survival but preserve quality of life across various stages of the disease. We do this by focusing on delivering treatments that are both effective and well-tolerated, so patients can focus on meaningful moments alongside their treatment—and make memories while managing symptoms.
The right treatment for the right patient at the right time
As more men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and more management options become available, the future of care must go beyond simply having more treatments.
By tailoring treatments to individuals, we treat people, not just their disease. At Bayer, our innovation is powered by collaboration. We work together with investigators, academic institutions, and industry partners to develop effective, targeted and ‘kinder’ therapies that extend survival while preserving quality of life across various stages of the disease.
Transforming the Future of Prostate Cancer Care
Bayer is growing its portfolio through prioritizing research and development to address the most pressing unmet medical needs across different stages of the disease. The patient is at the center of everything that we do. Patient needs, experiences, and preferences help shape how we think about research, from study design to the outcomes we measure.
Our R&D teams are always looking to deliver solutions that can make a meaningful difference to patients’ lives. If there is an opportunity to help improve symptoms and quality of life, that is our focus.
Our ambition is clear - to develop and deliver medicines that help improve and extend the lives of people living with prostate cancer so they can have more time, more moments, and more life with the people they love.
