Bayer Unveils STEM Education Center at Kunia Farm

As agriculture continues to face many challenges including food production needs, water stresses, pest problems and more, Bayer Hawaii is committed to fostering the next generation of innovators and farmers by supporting education programs in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

As part of that effort, Bayer Hawaii officially unveiled a new STEM Education Center at its Kunia Farm on Sept 18, 2017. Created as a resource for teachers, students and other groups interested in learning more about science, the STEM Education Center aims to provide teachers with helpful educational materials that they can take back to the classroom, and create an enjoyable experience for students that makes learning about science fun.

Currently, we host two to four student tours a month at Kunia, each one tailored for the grade level and/or specific topics of interest to the students. Lessons currently offered include seed germination, entomology – the study of insects, plant anatomy, soil erosion, and genetics. Students are also given a tour of the Bayer Kunia Farm, including the newly revamped entryway that features an 8 by 30 foot informational mural about our biodiversity and stewardship practices.

“The Department of Education cultivates community partnerships, like the one we have with Bayer Hawaii, to provide access to diverse, high-quality STEM teaching and learning opportunities,” said Grant Toyooka, STEM coordinator, Hawaii Department of Education. “We are thankful to Bayer for their continued support of education and we plan to make great use of the STEM Education Center for many years to come.”

Over the years, Bayer Hawaii has donated more than $1.2 million and our employees have volunteered hundreds of hours for students and schools throughout Hawaii, including student scholarships and internships; grants to help educators purchase equipment, tools and supplies for STEM education programs; and the Bayer Fund’s FIRST Robotics Grant Program.
