Bayer launches mono-material PP blister for Talcid® in Germany

Summary

New blister receives RecyClass Design for Recycling certification, with phased rollout planned across 11 additional European markets in 2026–2027

Basel, September 23, 2026 – Bayer has launched a mono-material polypropylene (mono-PP) blister for Talcid® in Germany, following its initial launch in Slovenia in late 2025. The new blister replaces a multi-material structure with a single-material polypropylene design intended to facilitate recycling in markets where appropriate collection, sorting and recycling systems are available. It maintains the quality, safety and product experience consumers expect from Talcid.

Talcid is Bayer’s antacid treatment for heartburn and acid-related symptoms. Germany accounts for approximately 75% of its European sales, making it the product’s largest market in the region and a significant location for the new packaging. The mono-PP blister is planned for phased rollout across 11 additional European markets over 2026–2027.

The launch comes as consumers and regulators place greater emphasis on packaging that combines product protection with designs that can better support recycling processes. According to McKinsey’s 2025 global consumer packaging survey, the ability to recycle packaging remains one of the sustainability characteristics consumers value most.

Conventional blister packs can combine different materials, which may complicate sorting and recycling. Talcid’s new blister contains only polypropylene, creating a simpler mono-material format while meeting the product-protection and quality requirements for consumer health products. The packaging has received RecyClass Design for Recycling certification, achieving the highest Recyclability Class A rating and a recyclable plastic content score of 98.86%. This reflects the compatibility of the packaging design with recycling processes under the RecyClass assessment methodology.

The certification relates to the packaging design and its assessment under RecyClass Design for Recycling criteria. Using a single material can facilitate sorting and recycling processes where appropriate collection, sorting and recycling systems are available. Actual recycling depends on local infrastructure and may vary between markets. The change applies only to the packaging. Talcid’s formulation, indication, safety profile, quality and usage instructions remain unchanged.

Building on Bayer’s Packaging Innovation

The Talcid launch builds on Bayer’s broader work to develop mono-material blister solutions. In 2024, Bayer introduced the healthcare industry’s first PVC-free polyethylene terephthalate (PET) one-material blister for Aleve in the Netherlands. Although the Talcid and Aleve formats use different materials, both programs simplify packaging structures while maintaining product protection and usability, demonstrating how Bayer is applying the same design principle across its portfolio.

“The promise of this mono-material polypropylene design is that it can improve compatibility with recycling processes where appropriate systems exist, while continuing to provide a strong consumer experience,” said Chris Padain, Vice President and Global Head of Design, Packaging, Product Experience & Sustainability for Bayer’s Consumer Health division. “Its push-through performance supports intuitive use, while the mono-material structure simplifies the packaging design. This is the kind of practical, scalable innovation that can make a meaningful difference across our portfolio.”

The Talcid mono-material PP blister supports Bayer Consumer Health’s broader packaging strategy. Across its portfolio, Bayer is working to improve the compatibility of packaging with recycling processes where suitable infrastructure exists, expand reusable packaging formats and incorporate recycled content where appropriate, and reduce unnecessary packaging materials.

Collaboration Across the Packaging Value Chain

The Talcid blister was developed through collaboration across the packaging value chain, bringing together material expertise, manufacturing capabilities and Bayer’s product, quality and regulatory requirements.

“Developing a mono-material blister for consumer health products requires the material, manufacturing process and product-protection requirements to work together,” said Martin Rank, Head of Sales & Marketing at Etimex Primary Packaging. “Our collaboration with Bayer has turned that technical challenge into a scalable PURELAY® PP mono-material blister solution for Talcid.”

The new blister is the result of years of collaboration to balance product protection, everyday usability and a mono-material packaging design intended to support sorting and recycling processes where appropriate collection, sorting and recycling systems are available. Talcid continues to be manufactured and supplied from Bayer’s site in Bitterfeld, Germany.

“Germany is Talcid’s largest European market, making it a natural next step for the new blister,” said Tobias Boldt, Consumer Health Cluster Lead for Germany and Austria. “This launch connects Talcid’s strong German heritage with a packaging innovation that is planned to reach consumers across more European markets.”
