Hue, September 22, 2022 - Bayer Vietnam launched its “Safe Use Ambassador” (SUA) initiative which engages future agriculture scientists and practitioners on the correct and safe use and handling of crop protection products.

Starting with the agricultural students at Can Tho University and Hue University, the Safe Use Ambassador program challenges students to propose and implement a knowledge transfer plan to improve local farmers' and applicators' understanding of safe and responsible handling and disposal of crop protection products.

Bayer is partnering with universities to foster the exchange of best practices in the use of crop protection products among farming communities.

All candidates will join a training on crop protection products and be provided with technology supports and guidance to put ideas into practice. After the final evaluation, one student with the best performing project will be selected as Bayer Safe Use Ambassador. The winner will get the opportunity to join a training trip to Germany and interact with scientists and experts alongside winners from other countries. Shortlisted students with impressive projects will be also offered an internship opportunity at Bayer Vietnam.

The Bayer SUA candidates will be trained on safe use of crop protection products to facilitate effective knowledge transfer to local farmers.

Mr. Chu Viet Ha, Head of Crop Science Division of Bayer Vietnam, shared: “Farmer safety is at the core of our sustainability strategy and needs to be addressed in partnership with relevant stakeholders. As an industry leader in agriculture, Bayer works diligently to ensure that the company’s products, services, and technologies are safe, sustainable, and environmentally responsible while meeting grower expectations and needs. A key part of this is ensuring that our employees and growers are trained to use our products responsibly, ecologically, and effectively—from the handling and application of the products to the disposal of empty containers.”

Launched in 2017, Safe Use Ambassadors aims to drive knowledge transfer in smallholder communities by extending the outreach of our training efforts to the students who will be the future agriculture experts and ambassadors for the transfer of technology right from universities to the farmers.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Van Vang, Head of College of Agriculture, Can Tho University, shared: “Appropriate personal protective equipment and proper disposal of pesticide containers, limit farmers’ exposure to chemicals to reduce the risk of adverse health effects when applying those products. We are grateful to partner with you to further promote the topic of product stewardship and best practices for the safe use of pesticides among farming communities. We believe with Bayer's expertise and networks in agriculture, this program can provide students with the best learning environment to improve their knowledge and prepare themselves for a future career in the agricultural sector.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Duc, Principal of the University of Agriculture and Forestry - Hue University, shared: “Bayer SUA is a great chance for our students to challenge themselves to apply what they have learned as well as their problem-solving skills to address a pressing issue of the agricultural industry in reality. We strongly encourage students to participate in this contest and look forward to strengthening our partnership with Bayer Vietnam to develop more meaningful programs for Vietnamese students.”

For the first time, Bayer Vietnam collaborate with University of Agriculture and Forestry - Hue University to widely promote SUA program to students.

Nguyen Dang Huan, the Winner of Safe Use Ambassador 2019, shared: “Being the winner of the Bayer SUA is one of the most memorable things that happened in my student time. This program provided me with practical knowledge, sharpened my soft skills, and widened my networks in the agricultural sector which is very helpful for me in pursuing future career goals. Additionally, becoming the "Bayer Safe Use Ambassador" made me more aware of the urgent need to progress toward sustainable agriculture as well as my responsibility in promoting product stewardship among farming communities to minimize risks to human health and protecting the environment.”

Nguyen Dang Huan, the winner of SUA contest 2019, was sharing his experience and advice with students in Can Tho University at the kick-off event.
