Key Takeaways

  • Bayer Hawaii collaborated with the nonprofit organization Ho'ola Na Pua to construct a sustainable community garden at the Pearl Haven campus, a residential treatment facility for adolescent girls overcoming severe trauma.
  • Over the course of a two-day volunteer event, 22 Bayer employees built raised garden beds, installed irrigation systems, and provided all necessary agricultural supplies to create a therapeutic outdoor learning space.
  • Bayer agricultural experts provided hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to Pearl Haven students, empowering the youth to act as peer educators in crop management and companion planting.

Fostering Healing and Education Through Agriculture

In June 2026, Bayer Hawaii partnered with the nonprofit organization Ho'ola Na Pua to construct a fully funded, sustainable community garden at the Pearl Haven residential treatment facility. Through the Oahu Outreach Initiative, 22 Bayer employees volunteered over two days to build the agricultural infrastructure and provide hands-on agricultural education to adolescent girls recovering from severe trauma and exploitation. This initiative provides the Pearl Haven campus with fresh vegetables, a therapeutic outdoor environment, and an interactive space for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

The community garden project was executed as a comprehensive team effort designed to establish a sustainable agricultural infrastructure for the Pearl Haven campus. Bayer Hawaii fully funded the initiative and provided all necessary agricultural supplies, including raised garden beds, nutrient-rich soil, irrigation equipment, vegetable seeds, and custom Bayer plant identification labels to help students easily track growing crops.

During the first day of the project, 13 Bayer Hawaii employees prepared the site, constructed the raised garden beds, and trenched the designated area. On the second day, a dedicated crew of nine employees installed the irrigation lines and filled the garden beds with soil, ensuring the garden would be easily maintainable for the staff and students at Ho'ola Na Pua.

Providing Hands-On STEM and Agronomic Training

Beyond physical construction, the core mission of the Bayer Hawaii Oahu Outreach Initiative is to share agronomic knowledge with local youth. On the second day of the garden build, Bayer team members were joined by two students from the Ho'ola Na Pua program. After assisting with soil preparation, these students received hands-on training from Bayer experts in fundamental planting techniques.

Bayer employees educated the students on proper seed placement, focusing on the correct seed depth and spatial techniques required for optimal plant growth. Additionally, the team taught the students the science of companion planting. This ecological concept explains which vegetables thrive best when planted in close proximity to one another to naturally deter pests and share soil nutrients.

Empowering Youth Through Peer Education

The primary goal of the community garden initiative was youth empowerment. Rather than planting the entire garden themselves, the Bayer Hawaii team intentionally planted only a few of each vegetable type alongside the students. This approach equipped the participating students with the agricultural skills and confidence necessary to take on leadership roles.

These two young leaders will now act as peer educators, teaching the remaining Ho'ola Na Pua students how to finish planting the crops and maintain the sustainable garden independently. Bayer Hawaii remains committed to supporting Ho'ola Na Pua and looks forward to watching both the garden and the students flourish.
