WHIPPANY, N.J., April 30, 2026 – Bayer is voluntarily recalling all unexpired Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6 mL (0.2 oz.) travel size bottles because these bottles, which are not child-resistant, do not have a required front label statement to that effect. The labels on the bottles warn consumers to “Keep out of reach of children” but do not contain the required statement “Package Not Child-Resistant.”
The recall only impacts Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6 mL (0.2 oz.) travel size bottles which are mainly sold at convenience stores and travel hubs in the U.S. including airports and bodegas. The product is not sold at major retailers like Walmart, Target or amazon.com. There are no issues of concern with other Afrin® sizes or varieties.
Bayer has notified its distributors of the recall and is arranging for returns of all unsold recalled products.
Consumers who have an unexpired 6 mL size Afrin® Original bottle should immediately store it in a safe location out of reach of children and may request a refund. Afrin Recall FAQs
Why is Bayer conducting this recall / What is the problem with the product?
Bayer decided to voluntarily recall the product due to the absence of a required labeling statement for its non-child resistant packaging. The labels currently state “Keep out of reach of children” but will be revised to also say “Package Not Child-Resistant.”
Why isn’t there a child-resistant cap on this Afrin® product?
The 6 mL travel size is the only size of Afrin® Original that does not have a child resistant cap as permitted by the federal packaging regulations. This is to provide an easy-to-open option for the elderly or those with physical disabilities.
The CPSC press release mentions non-compliance with Poison Prevention Packaging Act. Is this product safe?
The recall is related to a packaging and labeling issue that does not impact the quality or safety profile of the nasal spray.
Are other Afrin® products compliant with all labeling requirements?
The recall is only for Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6mL travel size bottles. The labeling issue does not involve any other Afrin® products.
What has Bayer done to correct the non-compliance?
Bayer is working with the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) on the recall, notified all of our distributor customers and is working to get Afrin® Original Nasal Spray 6 mL (0.2 oz.) travel size bottles with corrected labeling back in stores soon.
Where has the product been sold?
The product is sold by Bayer in bulk to distributors in the U.S. and not directly to retailers. As this is a travel size bottle, it is mainly being sold at convenience stores or travel hubs like airports. The product is not being sold at major retailers like Walmart, Target, or Amazon.
