Bayer: Helping Customers Sustain Patient Care Amid Market Disruptions
As radiology departments across the US continue to navigate the complexities of the current imaging market, including disruptions in supply chains and increased demand for CT contrast media, one constant remains: the need for reliable, quality supply partners to help sustain patient care.
“Preparing for the next challenge means we’re not just solving today’s issue – we’re building for the future,” said Sarah Gorlow, Supply Chain Business Partner, Bayer Radiology. “When you have steady supply, efficient technology designs, and an optimized workflow, a department’s ability to handle disruptions strengthens – and that’s something we’re showing our customers each day.”
A Market Under Pressure
The past few years have tested healthcare supply networks across modalities, and medical imaging has been no exception. Temporary shortages of saline and contrast agents underscore the importance of dependable partners who can meet rising demand.
Bayer’s investment in supply continuity and manufacturing capability reflects a broader mission: to support radiology professionals by providing them with diagnostic tools that help them focus on the patient.
Today, Bayer’s manufacturing pipeline remains well-stocked with a steady production output from dedicated manufacturing facilities and long-term external partners. Bayer’s commitment to manufacturing, both in terms of skill and scale, has been instrumental in helping customers mitigate past supply challenges.
“Our contrast media is manufactured at dedicated manufacturing sites and centers of excellence in Germany. During a recent contrast shortage, we were able to get an import allowance enabling us to bring in additional supply to our US-based costumers,” said Gorlow.
For Bayer, it is not just about maintaining inventory today – it is about long-term preparedness. The company has consistently invested in enhancing its global production capabilities to meet the growing needs of its customers. Bayer’s strategic investments are designed to not only expand manufacturing capacity, but to help ensure delivery of steady volumes of products, including contrast media.
“Another key element of our supply strategy is working to ensure production as close to the customer as possible, both in terms of materials and products,” continued Gorlow. “During a previous CT syringe shortage, we were able to consistently supply our US-based customers with their allotments because they were manufactured in Pennsylvania.”
In addition to its manufacturing, product innovations continue to redefine Bayer’s relationship with customers. In 2025, Bayer debuted the MEDRAD® Centargo multipatient CT injector, designed for high throughput suites. This system enables customers to spend more time focused on patient care while effectively managing contrast, saline use, and waste over a larger number of patients.
“Our innovations include not only the products – injectors, syringes and contrast – but also connectivity to radiology information systems and Bayer service. Our software solutions simplify and automate workflows before, during, and after contrast delivery, helping our customers achieve their goals and desired outcomes,” said Gorlow.
