Our Contributions

Bayer’s portfolio includes superior seeds, crop protection and digital solutions that give farmers the tools they need to grow high-quality, profitable crops.

Vegetable Seeds

With roughly 2,000 varieties in 20 different crops, Vegetables by Bayer offers high-performance seeds that deliver value for growers, the value chain and consumers alike:

  • Grower benefits: strong yield potential, climate adaptability and resilience, resistance to diseases and pests, and better harvestability.
  • Value chain qualities: improved shelf life and post-harvest durability to reduce waste and enhance marketability.
  • Consumer benefits: excellent taste, appealing appearance, consistent quality, convenience, and sensory experience.

Examples include:

  • Riboski tomato, a high-yielding beef variety delivering a leading disease resistance package, extra-large shiny deep-red fruits, year-round production for glasshouse markets, and strong shelf life.
  • Curdivex® Whitex cauliflower, which maintains a bright white appearance longer to boost shelf life and consumer appeal.

Crop Protection

Our crop protection portfolio includes both synthetic and biological innovations:

  • Plenexos® provides long-lasting control of hard-to-fight sucking pests, thanks to its double systemicity in the plant, helping them thrive and produce healthier crops.
  • Xivana®, Bayer's newest foliar fungicide with the modern OSBPI Fluoxapiprolin, provides highly efficient control of Late Blight and Downy mildew diseases with just 20 g active/hectare.
  • Icafolin-methyl, a broad-spectrum herbicide, will offer outstanding control over difficult to manage grasses, adding a unique, effective and sustainable solution to growers toolbox. Expected to launch in 2028, icafolin will bring farmers a new solution to support healthier, more productive crops across key markets worldwide.
  • Serenade® ASO and Serenade® Soil Activ combat bacterial and fungal diseases, supporting growers with sustainable options, in foliar and soil applications.

Digital Tools

We harness the power of digital transformation to provide farmers with tailored, outcome-driven solutions that increase profitability while reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint. Our solutions allow growers to precisely manage inputs, detect pests early, and monitor soil health:

  • ResiYou –  Bayer's AI-powered digital tool that predicts crop protection residue levels at harvest, ensuring compliance and safety. Find out more at: ResiYou by Bayer
  • MagicTrap – a digital insect monitoring solution that helps growers track insect populations and optimize pest management decisions. Our digital traps will be commercialized soon in several countries for a range of pests like Tuta absoluta in tomatoes, Lobesia in grapes, Codling moth in apples, Olive fly and olive moth in olives, and white flies in several crops.
  • Nematool – a digital soil monitoring tool that helps growers optimize input application for nematode management in outdoor and greenhouse crops. It also provides information about the quality of soil- solarization and the level of performance versus nematodes and soil borne diseases.

How does Bayer drive innovation in horticulture?

Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Our R&D teams operate worldwide, increasing productivity on the farm, advancing regenerative farming systems, and creating solutions that improve supply chain efficiency.

Our innovations start with seeds. Bayer’s global breeding team leverages our vast germplasm resources, precision breeding, genome editing, and a partnership innovation ecosystem to create seed varieties that address both consumer needs for quality, taste, shelf life and convenience, as well as the needs of growers for disease packages, climate resilience, high marketable yield and more.

The result is a pipeline of new seed varieties designed to support grower success and climate resilience, enable Regenerative Agriculture outcomes, and improve access to appealing, sustainable, and nutritious produce.

Sustainable horticulture also requires cutting-edge research into new modes of action in crop protection and culminates with consumers enjoying healthy produce. We are committed to identifying and applying data-driven solutions across the global value chain, enhancing the accessibility of safe, nutritious, and affordable fruits and vegetables worldwide.

Food Chain Partnership

Working together with the food chain

To increase the availability of fresh, high-quality produce, collaboration across the agricultural value chain and continuous innovation are essential.

Through ongoing investment in research and development, collaboration with farmers, industry partners, and other stakeholders, we help drive progress in areas such as regenerative agriculture, adoption of good agricultural practices (GAP), reduction of food loss and waste, and improved access to nutrition. By harnessing the power of innovation, we enable productive and resilient farming systems that deliver high-quality crops while reducing the environmental impact of agriculture and strengthening trust across the food value chain.

How does Bayer support smallholder fruit & vegetable producers?

Smallholder farmers play a vital role in global food security. Representing 84% of the world’s 570 million farms, they are the backbone of agricultural production in many low- and middle-income countries and are among the most important producers of fruits and vegetables. Yet many face barriers such as limited access to quality inputs, agronomic knowledge, markets and financing, which can constrain productivity, profitability and resilience.

Bayer supports smallholder farmers by focusing on improving access to agricultural products, services and partnerships.

  • We offer seed varieties such as Ansal tomato, whose excellent shelf life and fruit firmness help reduce damage during transportation, and Fortaleza cauliflower, which supports productivity through excellent adaptability. A recent impact study in India found that Fortaleza growers sold 13% more cauliflower than competitor varieties and achieved an estimated 45% increase in median earnings.
  • Through our Better Life Farming (BLF) alliance, we address last mile delivery challenges by offering portfolio of products and services to smallholder farmers in underserved geographies while supporting them with training and advisory services from a broad ecosystem of partners, improving smallholder livelihood as part of our commitment to support 100 Million smallholder farmers by 2030. BLF supports smallholders with more than 4,000 centers in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Central America.

How is Bayer supporting food & nutrition security?

Fruits and vegetables are fundamental to a healthy lifestyle, and we believe everyone should have access to them. Our consumer-driven research helps us develop varieties that combine outstanding taste, texture, and quality with traits like shelf life and visual appeal - making healthy choices more enjoyable every day.

At the same time, we are committed to improving accessibility. Through initiatives such as the Nutrient Gap Initiative, we contribute to closing gaps in nutrition by supporting greater availability of fruits and vegetables for people around the world.
