An unparalleled innovation pipeline to advance seeds, traits, crop protection, biological products, and digital solutions.
At Bayer, we know that no two fields are alike, and that farmers need solutions bringing together cutting-edge science, farmer-centric design, and system-based solutions to help agriculture become more productive, resilient, and sustainable. From advanced seeds and traits to crop protection and digital tools, our pipeline is built to support regenerative agriculture practices across geographies and cropping systems.
Why Bayer’s Agriculture Innovation Pipeline Matters
Farmers face increasing pressure from climate volatility, pests and diseases, resistance development, and the need to produce more with fewer resources. Bayer’s pipeline is designed to address these challenges through integrated innovation, not single technologies.
Our Approach:
- Focuses on real-world farmer needs
- Combines seeds, traits, crop protection, and digital tools
- Supports long-term productivity and environmental sustainability
Designer Seeds
We are driving benefits like increased yield and improved nutritional quality to consumers by designing seeds that are more resilient for an ever-changing climate. These benefits are foundational to support regenerative agriculture practices and give farmers the tools to produce more with less.
Bayer’s global breeding programs continuously improve elite germplasm across major crops, including corn, soy, cotton, vegetables, canola, wheat, and rice. Advanced breeding tools accelerate progress while preserving genetic diversity.
What this delivers:
- Higher yield potential
- Improved resilience to climate stress
- Enhanced quality and performance
Precision breeding accelerates product development while making innovations far more tailored to farmers’ fields and agronomic realities.
Bayer combines customer insights with multilevel data sets and deep genomic understanding of germplasm to anticipate the desired characteristics of next generation crops - such as corn hybrids optimized for specific environments.
With precision breeding capabilities, Bayer expects to reduce a breeding cycle from six years to four months, more than doubling the rate of genetic gain by 2030. This represents one of the most transformational changes in the history of plant breeding.
Bayer brings more than 50 years of experience supporting rice farmers through integrated crop protection systems.
Through Arize hybrids, which already represent around 40% of India’s growing directseeded rice (DSR) market, Bayer continues to expand its DSR leadership position. Precision breeding further improves yield performance, while the FarmRise digital platform helps educate and advise farmers on better agronomic decisions.
Direct Seeded Rice can:
- Reduce water use by up to 40%
- Reduce CO₂ emissions by 45%
- Reduce methane emissions by 85%
At scale, DSR supports Bayer’s goal of improving water use efficiency per kilogram of crop by 25% by 2030, transforming rice cropping systems globally.
Leading Plant Biotechnology at Global Scale
Through expertise in gene, protein, RNAi technology, and genome editing, Bayer continuously replenishes and strengthens its trait pipeline - developing the largest multigene stacks available to growers.
While creating a strong value proposition for farmers, these new technologies backed by data-science are allowing us to expand our focus to
- improve crop efficiency and resiliency,
- disease resistance and
- crop quality.
Plus, we have launched more biotech traits than any other company, enabling farmers to grow crops like corn, soybeans, cotton, and canola with game changing capabilities on approximately 300 million acres annually.
CoverCress demonstrates the power of gene editing and advanced breeding. Using multiple gene edits, Bayer’s partner transformed field pennycress from a common weed into a novel cash cover crop.
Improvements in oil profile, protein content, and yield enable CoverCress to serve as a low carbon renewable feedstock for biofuels.
Beyond economic value, cover crops help:
- Store carbon in the soil
- Improve soil health and organic matter
- Support healthy field microbiomes
Bayer traits don’t just protect yield - they enable regenerative agriculture practices by giving farmers flexibility.
Herbicide tolerant crops allow effective weed control without intensive tillage, reducing soil compaction and topsoil erosion while improving carbon sequestration.
These traits have enabled widespread adoption of no-till and conservation tillage, transforming laboratory innovation into real-world on farm success.
Protecting Yield While Raising Sustainability Standards
Bayer is a global leader in crop protection, helping growers address pest, disease, and weed challenges through continuous innovation.
Our approach has already delivered next generation solutions such as Plenexos. Beyond this, Bayer is redefining how crop protection products are discovered through a fundamentally new approach: CropKey.
CropKey is Bayer’s next generation discovery platform for crop protection.
Using Profile Driven Discovery, Bayer designs molecules based on predefined safety and sustainability profiles that exceed current industry standards - while delivering exceptional efficacy through precisely defined biological pathways.
Crop protection tools safeguard around 30% of global crop yields - approximately 550 million tons of food, equivalent to feeding more than 2 billion people.
Bayer’s solutions protect row crops such as corn, wheat, rice, and soy, as well as fruit and vegetable crops worldwide - ensuring consistent access to nutritious, high-quality food.
Biologicals are no longer limited to microbials. The biologicals industry is expanding rapidly in many different directions and includes new kinds of nature-derived biocontrol and biostimulant solutions like
- pheromone products,
- botanicals and plant extracts, and
- synthetic biology.
Biological innovation opens new pathways, including nitrogen fixing microbes for crops like corn, wheat, and rice - food security crops that do not naturally fix nitrogen.
Bayer is shaping the biologics market as a preferred R&D and commercialization partner to bring innovations to millions of growers while combining
- regulatory expertise,
- trusted brands, and
- global scale.
Currently, agriculture accounts for about 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Synthetic nitrogen fertilizer has increased global agricultural production by the equivalent of food for over 3.5 billion people but creating that fertilizer accounts for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions alone.
Nitrogen fixing technologies offer a potential path forward by reducing the need for carbon-intensive synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, while maintaining global food production capacities – the best of both worlds.
Pheromone Technology – Bayer’s Vynyty Products
Vynyty Citrus is an innovative pheromone-based device that attracts and eliminates pests without residues in harvests or the environment.
Vynyty Press - distributed by Bayer through our partnership with M2i - disrupts mating behavior in target pests, helping growers of fruits, vegetables, tomatoes, and grapes integrate biomimicry-based pest control into their systems.
Digital and Carbon Frontiers: From Data Driven Farming to Value Chain Transformation
Digital tools and data have been transforming agriculture for decades. Early advances in analytics and software enabled researchers to identify genetic markers hidden within vast data sets in labs and greenhouses. These capabilities later moved to the field, where platforms like FieldView™ equipped farmers with data-driven insights that go far beyond what the eye can see—supporting better, more confident onfarm decisions.
Today, a new digital frontier is emerging. What began as a tool to build best-in-class seeds and traits, and then evolved into actionable on-farm decision support, is now extending beyond the farm and into the agricultural value chain.
Agriculture is a highly complex, data-rich industry. Over the past 20+ years, the focus has been on creating and structuring data. We are now entering the next phase of digitization - where the value lies in connecting, interpreting, and activating data to deliver advice, build trust, and enable growers to participate more fully in the value chain, including sustainability and carbon outcomes.
FieldView™ enables farmers to collect, store, and analyze data on one easy-to-use platform.
Backed by dedicated customer support, science-based recommendations, and advanced analytics, FieldView helps farmers make more informed decisions and maximize returns.
