A new generation of Bt maize for control of fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda)

Fall armyworm is an incredibly invasive—and pervasive—threat to staple crops around the world. As such, we need to monitor whether fall armyworm develops resistance to existing crop protection solutions, so we can continually introduce new traits that remain effective. In this research, we conducted laboratory, greenhouse and field tests to study two specific proteins in genetically modified maize. We found that the expression of these proteins consistently protected the plants against larval feeding by fall armyworm, representing an important alternative to manage trait resistance issues in South America.
