On Monday, February 6, 2023 the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, together with the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Franziska Giffey, visited Bayer’s pharmaceuticals site in Berlin to discuss innovation in the pharmaceutical industry with former CEO Werner Baumann and Stefan Oelrich, member of the Board of Management and President of the Pharmaceuticals Division.

During a visit to Bayer’s pharmaceutical research labs, the importance of investments into state of the art research and development technology was explained to them by Stephan Boehme, Head of Compound Repository & Logistics Berlin. Furthermore the plans for a translational cell and gene therapy center which could be established together with Europe’s largest university hospital Charité and the government of Germany as well as the federal state of Berlin, were discussed. Focus was on the importance of bringing innovations to market as fast as possible so that patients in need can be helped with new treatment options in a timely manner.

“We enjoyed today’s visit of Olaf Scholz together with Franziska Giffey and their interest in our company. The pharmaceutical industry is in the midst of enormous change. Breakthrough innovations have the potential to change and save lives. In order to be able to turn these innovations into products more quickly, good cooperation between all stakeholders such as industry, regulatory authorities and politicians is necessary,” said Stefan Oelrich.
