Shaping Agriculture through Innovation

Our world faces enormous challenges including a changing climate, limited natural resources and a growing population. Agriculture is part of the solution, helping farmers not only to grow enough but to grow better for our planet and its people. At Bayer, we have leading research capabilities in biology, biotechnology, crop protection and data science, bolstered by collaborations, that allow us to deliver tailored solutions leading to greater choices for consumers around the world.

Agriculture of the Future

There has never been a more important time for innovation in agriculture

Through our tailored solutions, like seeds and traits, crop protection, and digital tools, we’re offering farmers better answers to meet the specific needs of their farms, all while preserving the environment. Bringing together our expertise, we’re using our unique position as an agricultural leader to deliver innovation that helps farmers grow more sustainably and responsibly.

Every crop, field, and farmer is different. Each has their own needs, challenges, and goals. In our effort to truly benefit farmers, consumers, and the planet, we believe it is our responsibility to ensure that our innovations are accessible to people all over the world.

At Bayer, we aim to empower farmers, helping them to achieve their best harvest each growing season and to foster sustainable, reliable growth for their businesses and communities. As we work to ensure bountiful harvests today, we’re committed to leaving the planet in better shape for tomorrow.

The Crop Science division of Bayer maintains a global network of research and development facilities. While research is carried out centrally at a number of dedicated sites, development of crop protection products as well as plant breeding and trait development activities take place both at these sites and at numerous field testing and breeding stations in more than 50 countries.

To provide growers with sustainable solutions, we approach innovation in three ways. We focus on in-field challenges and opportunities by developing tailored solutions that combine the right seeds and traits, crop protection and digital tools to meet the needs of farmers in their specific fields. We look for incremental and disruptive innovations by continuously improving our offerings, while advancing transformational breakthroughs with partners at the intersection of emerging technologies. Last but not least, we invest in sustainability by delivering products that help reduce the environmental impact of agriculture and improve the lives of smallholder farmers.

Our product pipeline contains numerous new crop protection products, seed varieties and enhanced products (life cycle management). As announced in June 2019, we plan to invest some €5 billion in new weed control methods over the next 10 years. In 2020 alone, we invested nearly €2 billion on research and development. This includes research into resistance mechanisms, the discovery and development of new modes of action, and more precise application recommendations with the aid of digital technologies. We also enter into collaborations with external partners and leverage our established network to drive innovation and bring new solutions to farmers.
