Statement on Anderson
On November 17, 2023, the jury in the Anderson trial in the Cole County Circuit Court, Missouri, found in favor of the plaintiffs and awarded them $61.2 million in compensatory damages and $1.5 billion punitive damages. On March 15, 2024, the court reduced the damages to $611 million total. Our statement:
“While the court reduced the unconstitutionally excessive damage award, the company believes that the court did not apply the law correctly on damages and will be filing an appeal. We also disagree with the ruling on the liability verdict as it is at odds with the extensive weight of scientific evidence and the consistent assessments of expert regulators and scientists worldwide, and was marred by significant and reversible legal and evidentiary errors that unfairly prejudiced the company. The company has achieved favorable outcomes in 14 of the last 20 cases which have gone to trial, including the four most recent trials, and has resolved the overwhelming majority of claims in this litigation. The damages in the adverse verdicts in this litigation that have reached final judgments have been reduced by more than 90%.”
