Genomic Cancer Testing: See The Real Picture of a Cancer Diagnosis

We are used to hearing about cancer treatments in relation to a specific part of the body such as the breast, lung or prostate. But recently, there has been a paradigm shift in how we approach cancer treatment – towards precision medicine, which is tailored to each individual.

Understanding Genomic Cancer Testing & Precision Medicine

Genomic cancer testing harnesses the power of precision medicine and can paint a more precise picture of a cancer diagnosis. It’s used to identify different changes in DNA known as alterations within cancer cells that determine how a tumor behaves or why it grows. This knowledge offers doctors a way to recommend more targeted treatments earlier and reduce the number of treatments patients may try.

Genomic cancer testing allows physicians to create more personalized treatment plans for the patient based on their cancer. Bayer is encouraging genomic cancer testing from the start of a diagnosis so precision medicine can be administered earlier in the treatment continuum when available.

A Gap in Knowledge

Genomic cancer testing is often mistaken for genetic testing, which looks at inherited genes, or not discussed at all by patients and doctors alike. Yet, genomic cancer testing can personalize cancer care by helping patients and their doctors better understand their diagnosis and reveal specific cancer drivers.

For cancer patients, it’s important to have a better understanding of what drives their cancer. The results can lead to treatment options that are tailored specifically for each person’s cancer.
