Adoption Program

After their time at Bayer, many laboratory animals start a new life as pets. We work together with animal welfare organizations to which we are happy to entrust our animals in order to pass them on to private households.

Almost all of the animals accepted into the adoption program are dogs. However, we have also tried to find homes for cats, rabbits, pigeons, fish and other animals. We make no exception, because every animal is close to our hearts. All animals are given to our partner organizations free of charge. Beforehand, they are thoroughly examined and vaccinated by vets.

With the help of these organizations, a high four-digit number of animals have now been placed. All partners in our adoption programme ensure that the animals are only placed in the hands of experienced pet owners, offer their support to the owners of the newly placed pets and organize regular meetings.

Are former lab animals different from other pets? We are in close contact with the organizations and sometimes also with the new owners and can say that all animals, after a short adaptation period, become great companions.

A Bayer-funded study on the adoption of laboratory animals, led by an independent veterinarian, found that 91.7% of all owners of previous lab dogs would choose a lab dog again based on their experience. This not only proves how completely satisfied the new owners are, but also confirms the good housing conditions during the trial phase and the success of the adoption program.
